Monitors donated to mission school

100 CRT monitors donated to mission school in the Philippines.

Gosford NSW

The Christian Brothers have 19 schools near Kabankalan, Negros Island near Cebu in the middle of the Philippines. The schools are in poor condition, with some classrooms having dirt floors and no desks (photo 32).

Schools with 500 students may have as few as 5 computers. With so few computers, student may only have as little as half an hour computer practice time per week (photo 50). In class up to 6 students share one computer.

While flat screens have replaced CRT monitors in Australia, m ost computers sold in the Philippines are sold with 14 or 15 inch CRT monitors costing $80.

200 second hand computers ranging from P1 to PIII and monitors are being sent in a shipping container to Cebu. From Cebu the computers will be taken by ferry to Kabankalan. Large 21 inch monitors will be used for classroom demonstration (photo 53) while smaller monitors will be used for the students' computer.

The software will be Windows 98 with Office 97. Microsoft provides the software at a nominal cost.

A file server with CD images and Internet connection is planned after the computers are all installed.
